Habitat for Humanity International is providing our local Habitat affiliate $150,000 through the Self Help Homeowners Opportunity Program (SHOP). SHOP is a competitive federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Habitat for Humanity International subgrants the SHOP funds received to US affiliates. In 2009, Habitat for Humanity International transferred more than $8.3 million in SHOP funds to affiliates for land acquisition and infrastructure improvements.
Bend Area Habitat for Humanity will use this money to help pay System Development Charges for 10 upcoming home builds over the next two years in both Bend and Prineville.
Bend Area Habitat for Humanity builds homes through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat homes.
